Water leaked in above 33 feet - but Canon handled it well

Hello!

I anxiously awaited this camera because I had previously had a leaky waterproof Olympus camera. I had previous been very loyal to Canon and Nikon, and I regretted going to Olympus and having trouble. So was quite excited that Canon was getting into waterproof cameras.

The camera is great - great images, easy to use, great video, etc. But water leaked in rather quickly and at about 8 feet in a pool and then later in the ocean.

Each time it leaked, the LCD display would go off and there was water in the lens area. I was able to leave it alone for a few days each time and it would "repair itself" as it dried out. But this last time (the third time) it refused to turn on any longer. So I begrudgingly sent it in.

It's been about ten days now and I got my camera back today - a new one! I think it may be slightly updated as well. I'm very excited to have it back; it has come with perfect timing.

So yes, I do actually recommend this camera (despite the leaks) because Canon handled it well and it really is a great item.
Does the Job

i don't know what the problem is? i had purchased this camera for a huge family vacation at the Bahamas. I read the reviews and the problems that might occur, (water seeping into camera etc) i did research and came to the conclusion that this was the best camera for price. After reading reviews regarding warrenty etc, i made sure i followed instructions carefully and made sure ALL CLOSURES were closed (battery flap etc)
turned out to be an excellent camera and would recommend it. Made the vacation snorkeling and swimming that much better!
Good Product but has some issues - can't be your only camera

Reviewer: mbaldwin,
The Canon D10 malfunctioned once with the error message of "Lens Error". We read some reviews online that had the same problem. Some of the reviewers returned the product while others just waited for the error to disappear. Since this is not our only camera, we just waited till the next day. We removed the battery overnight. The next day we replaced the battery and it worked. We have not gotten that error message again but we rarely use it. I hope it works when we need it to take that breath-taking picture :)

Reviewer: fatadinvis,
I've had this camera for a year. Bought it last year before going in vacation in Costa Rica, to ensure that I can get some pictures in the water or anywhere where and when I couldn't use my Canon Digital SLR. I have waited to review it until I used it enough times and in different conditions. It has held well on dry land and in water. The quality of the pictures is very good and it is very easy to use. I have taken pictures in the ocean, I went white water rafting with it, stayed in torrential rain and taken pictures, even zip-lined with it! While rafting some really white waters I had the camera in a tiny camera bag secured across my body. I fell in the water and I had no worries that my camera will die before I get back on my tube. I dropped it a few times and it's fine. The screen is actually the most exposed to shock and I have been trying to be careful about that. The lens are recessed so they are somehow protected. I have other Canon cameras and that is one reason I went with this camera. It had most of the features I wanted, plus a movie mode. The movies are decent quality, even in a dark, with smoke-effects party hall, and good sound. I even recorded small videos at a concert hall in NYC, and I was amazed at the clarity of the sound.
I take it everywhere I think I might have a chance to get some shots and don't want to lug around the backpack with the big 'guns'. It fits in a pocket or a woman's purse (not tote) with no problem.
PROs: stylish, easy to use and carry around, very user-friendly, amazing picture and good video quality, even in water. It also rotates the image on the screen, like the Ipod.
CONs: screen protection is recommended, sometimes when I put it in the water and then took it out the lens 'sweated' for a few minutes, when trying to take pictures in bright sun, with the sun reflecting in the screen, the image completely blacks.
It is by far not as fast as a DSLR, even with a fast card in. It takes a few seconds longer until it 'charges' again for the next shot, even when not using the flash. At night, it's better used with a tripod or have very steady hands. The image will come out shaken. During the day light this doesn't seem to be a problem, but the IS doesn't seem to be working very well with the night settings.
I like this camera and I recommend it. It serves the purpose it was made for at a decent price.

Fantastic Shutter Speed!

I bought this camera back in Oct. 2009 and just barely got around to using it because I had another camera. I finally pulled it out for use during a pool party. The shutter speed is sooooo fast, it made me want to cry almost. I could get action shots of people driving and the water splashing, and everything was caught perfectly without any action blurs.
And water splashed onto the camera with no problems either. I was tempted to just submerge the camera too but never got around to it. This camera is awesome!!! I will update my review once I use it more and use more of the features too.
